Libertyville needs community center

As voters mull the possibility of a Brainerd Community Center, I hope they will consider the impact a renovated Brainerd would have on the performance arts in our area.

While the proposed theater is by no means a fancy arena with all the bells and whistles, it would allow a much greater, more flexible space than is currently available for local groups, and especially children's theater.

I have heard some people grumble about the emphasis being placed on theater at Brainerd, but the fact is that theater is one of the best activities for both kids and adults. Studies have shown that children who participate in theater possess higher-level thinking and social skills that will improve their lives, critical thinking skills that include memorization, improvisation, self-reflection, organization, analysis and collaboration - important skills they will carry on into adulthood.

Adults involved in community theater find a challenging, creative outlet as well as enjoying a wider circle of friends. The whole village benefits from improved facilities, as audiences who come to see shows spend money in other areas such as local restaurants and shops.

Our local theater companies are crying for space. Brainerd can answer that cry, but only if you vote for it to become a reality.

Please vote yes on Brainerd. For the children. For the arts. For the future.
