Hawthorn Woods Police Commander Serves Community for 20 Years

HAWTHORN WOODS - On March 4, 2014 Hawthorn Woods Police Department Commander, Gary Scharringhausen, celebrated 20 years of service with the Village of Hawthorn Woods. Commander Scharringhausen started as a patrol officer in 1984. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2003, and then promoted again in 2005 to his current rank of Commander. He is the first employee of Hawthorn Woods to reach this longevity status.

Commander Scharringhausen received a department commendation for bravery in 2001 after putting himself in harm's way to affect a drug arrest. He was also honored by the Village Board with a Resolution in 2009 after he received a Certificate of Achievement from the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation for his volunteer work. Commander Scharringhausen was instrumental in the creation of the South Lake County Regional Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).

Pamela O. Newton, Chief Operating Officer and Chief of Staff, personally thanked Commander Scharringhausen for his 20 years of continuous service to the Hawthorn Woods community. "The people of this community appreciate this 20 year milestone and thank Commander Scharringhausen for his dedication to Hawthorn Woods," stated Newton.
