Online auction begins for 14,000 unclaimed pieces

The Illinois state treasurer's office will offer more than 14,000 pieces of unclaimed property for sale in an upcoming auction.

Treasurer Dan Rutherford said Tuesday items being auctioned include a diamond and aquamarine engagement-and-wedding-ring set, gold charm necklaces and a 1947 Mexican peso.

The online auction starts at 10 a.m. March 17 and begins winding down at 10 a.m. March 21.

The pieces are for sale because owners haven't come forward to claim them in more than five years.

An outside vendor has appraised all the items in the auction. Bids on each must reach at least 75 percent of the appraised value.

Buyers must purchase their winnings with a credit card. A 2 percent administrative fee will be assessed and buyers must pay for shipping.
