Libertyville man dies while snorkeling
GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands — Police in the Cayman Islands say a tourist from Libertyville has died while snorkeling in the British Caribbean territory.
The man was identified as 64-year-old Richard Chaput. A Royal Cayman Islands Police Service statement says there appear to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death, but an investigation was ongoing Friday.
Chaput was snorkeling off Cemetery Beach near the northwestern tip of Grand Cayman island with his wife and several friends Wednesday when he began having trouble. He apparently lost consciousness while they tried to get him back to shore.
Police say members of the public and two fire service officers gave him CPR before an ambulance took him to the hospital in George Town, where he was pronounced dead.
