A 14-year-old sister who felt unappreciated by her 11-year-old half sibling stabbed her more than 30 times Tuesday morning in their Mundelein home, killing her, police say. Suburban woman charged with alligator abandonment

An Oakbrook Terrace woman is accused of abandoning a sickly alligator at O’Hare International Airport in November. Alexis Prokopchuk, 29, was charged with two misdemeanor counts of reckless conduct and one misdemeanor count of cruelty to animals. Prokopchuk appeared in court yesterday in Chicago. Full story.

Elgin might hold Fourth of July fireworks with casino’s help

After hearing Grand Victoria Casino might want to partner with the city of Elgin to hold Fourth of July fireworks downtown, the Elgin City Council postponed making a decision about the expense. Having fireworks at Festival Park would cost about $67,000, with about $26,000 of that being police, fire and public works personnel costs, according to the city’s estimates. Full story.

Train scrapes front of car in Palatine

A Palatine woman who got caught in traffic too close to the railroad tracks Wednesday morning had the front of her vehicle scraped by a Metra train, Palatine police said. The incident forced a 90-minute train delay. Full story.
