Cubs claim pitcher Marshall from Yankees
The Chicago Cubs claimed right-handed pitcher Brett Marshall off waivers from the New York Yankees on Monday.
A scouting report at Baseball Prospectus last January ranked Marshall No. 11 among Yankees prospect rated his fastball (89-91) and change-up as solid-average pitches and said his breaking pitches were not impressive. It projected him as a number four or five starter.
Here are the details on Marshall’s career, as provided by the Cubs:
Marshall, 23, made his major league debut last season with three relief appearances in two stints for the Yankees, pitching to a 4.50 ERA (6 ER/12.0 IP) with no record. He spent the majority of 2013 with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, going 7-10 with a 5.13 ERA (79 ER/138.2 IP) in 25 starts. Marshall tied his career high with 120 strikeouts and walked 68 batters. He was designated for assignment by the Yankees on Dec. 19.
A native of Highlands, Texas, Marshall is 36-32 with a 4.07 ERA (278 ER/614.2 IP) in 115 career minor league games (113 starts) since the Yankees selected him in the sixth round of the 2008 draft. He spent the entire 2012 campaign with Double-A Trenton, going 13-7 with a 3.52 ERA (62 ER/158.1 IP) and a team-high 120 strikeouts in 27 starts. Following the season, he was tabbed by Baseball America as the Yankees sixth-best prospect.
