Zion man dies, woman critically injured in Mundelein crash

A Zion man died Sunday night after a two-car collision in Mundelein, authorities said.

Eric Ocampo, 34, was killed in the 5:20 p.m. crash on Townline Road east of Route 45.

A passenger in his car, 36-year-old Irma Martinez of Zion, was injured.

She was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where she was listed in critical but stable condition.

Ocampo was leaving a shopping center parking lot and turning east onto Townline Road when his Toyota Corolla was struck by a BMW headed west, Mundelein Deputy Police Chief Don Hansen said.

The driver of the BMW was identified by police as Russell Sternal, 24, of Mundelein. He wasn’t hurt.

No charges were filed.

Police said the roadway was wet but clear at the time of the crash.

The accident remains under investigation, and the Lake County state’s attorney’s office will review the findings.
