Officials to Illinoisans: Prepare for cold

With temperatures plummeting, authorities are reminding Illinoisans to take precautions against biting cold.

Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications says people should make sure they have emergency kits in their homes and cars — in case an especially bad snow storm hits. Cell phones should be kept charged for emergencies.

Water officials say people should be aware of the threat of freezing pipes. If people do freeze, you shouldn’t use candles or an open flame to thaw them. Use a hair dryer or heating pad.

People should also know their rights when it comes to heat.

A Chicago ordinance, for instance, requires landlords heat rental units during cold months. From Sept. 15 to June 1, temperatures inside a rental residence must be at least 68 degrees during the day.
