9 people stuck in Chicago elevator for 90 minutes

CHICAGO — For nine people trying to leave the Cook County Administration Building in downtown Chicago on Friday, it wasn't exactly the start to the weekend they had hoped for.

The group became trapped inside an elevator for about an hour and a half late Friday afternoon.

County employee Sheila Atkins was among those waiting for firefighters to open the doors of the malfunctioning elevator, which became stuck near the bottom of the high-rise building.

She told reporters afterward that the group passed the time calmly, getting to know one another, sharing gum, playing games on their phones and chatting.

No one was hurt.

According to preliminary information, officials said it appeared an electrical fault was to be blame.
