Falling temps, snow create icy roads

Yesterday’s first accumulating snowfall of the season coupled with dropping temperatures caused some roads and bridges in Lake, McHenry and Cook counties to be icy. Numerous fender-benders were attributed to the icy conditions and several bridges were closed during rush hour last night until they could be salted. Full story.

Moving Wall’s Aurora visit comes to a close

The Moving Wall, a three-fifths replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, finished its final day on display yesterday behind West Aurora High School. The traveling memorial visited there from Nov. 7 through yesterday, Veterans Day. The final day was highlighted by a wreath-laying ceremony. Full story with video.

Overdue honors bestowed at Veterans Day ceremony

U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk’s presented four medals earned during World War II to retired Navy Radio Technician 2nd Class George Boesen of Arlington Heights at the Buffalo Grove Park District’s annual Veterans Day Celebration. Also recognized during the ceremony was Buffalo Grove resident Al Kamikow, whose knighting by the French last week closely coincided with his 90th birthday. Full story with video.

Mundelein restricts electronic cigarette sales

Effective today, you have to be 18 or older to purchase electronic cigarettes in Mundelein, village trustees decided last night. They also created rules for the vapor-creating devices, making it illegal for anyone under 18 to possess electronic cigarettes. The rules mirror the state’s legislation, which doesn’t take effect until January. Full story with video.

Kane County prepares for influx of weddings

Today’s date, 11/12/13, is expected to draw a lot of extra couples to the courthouse in the hopes of getting married on a memorable date. Judges will perform weddings between 1:30 and 4 p.m. today at the Kane County Courthouse. Judges there doubled up their afternoon court calls to make themselves available for the anticipated rush. Hits keep coming for Bears

Bears cornerback Charles Tillman is sidelined for the season after a right-triceps injury in Sunday’s 21-19 loss to the Detroit Lions. A high ankle sprain will keep quarterback Jay Cutler from playing this Sunday. The loss Sunday knocked the Bears out of first place in the NFC North. Full story by Bob LeGere.

Rose injured in Bulls win

Derrick Rose scored 16 points before injuring a hamstring in the fourth quarter. The Bulls went on to beat the Cleveland Cavaliers for a 96-81 victory last night at the United Center. Rose described the injury as a minor sprain. Mike McGraw reports.
