Macy's department store has lit the Christmas tree and opened its animated holiday windows at its downtown Chicago location.

It's the 106th lighting of the Great Tree in the store's historic Walnut Room.

WBBM radio reports Gov. Pat Quinn was in attendance as the switch was flipped. The Chicago Democrat says he's hoping for strong retail sales this holiday season.

Some shoppers say it's a bit early for Christmas displays, with Halloween barely behind them and Thanksgiving still weeks away.

But Susan Portugal of Skokie says it's just what she needed to put her in a holiday mood.
