NIU jersey auction to benefit Active Heroes

DeKALB — Special game jerseys to be worn by the Northern Illinois University Huskies during their Mid-American Conference football game against Ball State on Wednesday, Nov. 13, will be auctioned to benefit Active Heroes, a charity that supports veterans, active military and their families.

During NIU’s Heroes game, when the Huskies will honor past and present members of the military, as well as fire, police and other first responders, NIU will wear one-of-a-kind black jerseys produced by Adidas for the Huskies, featuring stars on one shoulder and stripes on another. The word “Heroes” will appear on the back of every jersey. The Huskies’ helmet decals for the game will have stars and stripes inside the letters “NIU” within the logo.

From now until Nov. 19 at 11:59 p.m., fans can log on to the NIU Active Heroes Auction website at http://www.niu.activeheroes.org to bid on one or several of the 99 jerseys that will be made available and auctioned to the public.

Active Heroes helps veterans, active duty military, and their families by providing programs to combat post-traumatic stress disorder. For more information on the charity, visit ActiveHeroes.org.

“Active Heroes is very excited and proud to partner with the NIU Huskies,” said Troy Yocum, founder of Active Heroes. “Our team of veterans is looking forward to being on field for the game and to see the players wearing these amazing jerseys. I know it makes a difference in their lives to see the amount of support for their sacrifices! ”

NIU head coach Rod Carey said the Huskie team is behind the effort.

“We’re excited about the partnership,” Carey said. “That’s what it’s all about is a chance for us to assist and be involved with this great cause.”

Kickoff for the NIU-Ball State game at Huskie Stadium is at 7 p.m. The contest will be televised on either ESPNU or ESPN2.

NIU is offering a two-game pack of tickets to the Huskies’ final two home games (vs. Ball State on Nov. 13 and vs. Western Michigan on Nov. 26) for just $24. Tickets are available at 815-753-PACK (7225) during regular business hours.
