Accomplice in bat attack sentenced

A 22-year prison sentence was handed the woman who was the getaway driver for a man who used a baseball bat to beat two women, including a Northern Ireland exchange student who suffered severe brain injuries.

Marcy Cruz testified against Heriberto Viramontes, who was convicted last week of attempted murder, armed robbery and aggravated battery. Cruz entered into a plea agreement with prosecutors before testifying.

Assistant State’s Attorney Margaret Ogarek said during a Thursday hearing the testimony of the 28-year-old Cruz “was truthful.”

During Viramontes’ trial, Cruz testified that on April 23, 2010, they drove to Chicago’s Bucktown neighborhood, where Viramontes told her he wanted to rob people.

Cruz said Viramontes grabbed a bat and jumped out of the car. When he returned, he was carrying two purses.
