19 train cars carrying coal derail in S. Illinois

CHRISTOPHER — Emergency officials in southern Illinois say there is no public safety threat after a train hauling coal derailed in Franklin County.

Franklin County Emergency Management director Ryan M. Buckingham says 19 cars of a Burlington-Northern train derailed Sunday afternoon. It happened between the towns of Christopher and Zeigler in a rural area. Buckingham says all but two of the train cars were heavily damaged.

Officials say they’re investigating the cause of the derailment. Christopher is about 25 miles north of Carbondale.
