Quinn says more work needed on gun sentences bill
Gov. Pat Quinn says he favors a “comprehensive approach” when it comes to a bill that toughens gun crime sentences.
The Chicago Democrat has long favored gun control, including attempts to ban high-capacity ammunition magazines. He also opposed Illinois’ concealed carry legislation, which lawmakers had to approve in order to comply with a court order.
Quinn told reporters Thursday that a bill proposing mandatory minimum sentences sponsored by state Rep. Mike Zalewski is “by no means a final product” but would not specify how he’d change it.
The measure requires a 3-year prison sentence for illegally carrying a loaded gun. Zalewski called off a committee vote this week to meet with opponents.
