Reality falls short of vision for bike sculpture

INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis sculpture that was supposed to resemble author Kurt Vonnegut is drawing plenty of attention, but not the kind the artist envisioned.

Residents want the sculpture removed because they say it doesn't measure up to other public art in the area.

Artist Jeff Laramore envisioned arranging 20 or 30 bikes in the shape of a head and using wheels and a cluster of bikes to resemble Vonnegut's eyeglasses and curly hair.

But The Indianapolis Star (http://indy.st/17hX5Uz ) reports the version that went up about a month ago uses just six or seven bikes and lacks Vonnegut-like features.

Laramore says the project had a limited budget. He says it's "not the greatest sculpture" but isn't the worst he's seen.

Civic leaders say there are no plans to remove it.
