Chicago transit rider sues over new fare card

A Chicago Transit Authority rider is suing the agency and the company hired to roll out a new fare card, claiming riders are being overcharged.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that James D. Kenger is suing the CTA and Cubic transportation Systems, the company paid to implement the new Ventra fare card. He’s seeking class-action status.

Kenger claims in a lawsuit filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Chicago that he was double-charged for a single fare on Sept. 24, then two days later repeatedly was charged $2 after calling a customer service line to complain.

CTA spokeswoman Catherine A. Hosinski told the newspaper that nobody was charged for calling customer service. She says it appears all transactions on Kenger’s account were transit rides and reloading his account.
