Mundelein police looking for man who took girl

Mundelein police are looking for a man they say abducted a 3-year-old girl outside her apartment Monday evening and then returned her to the area a short time later.

The girl was walking up to her building in the Diamond Lake Condominiums, 550 Deepwoods Drive, with her mother and two siblings at about 5:30 p.m. when a man got out of a smaller black vehicle and grabbed the child, said Mundeline police Cmdr. Fred Kliora.

Multiple witnesses saw the man — described as black or Hispanic — leave, driving toward Route 45. About a half-hour later, a bystander discovered the girl in a parking lot adjacent to the abduction area, police said.

“He obviously came back into the area and dropped the girl off,” Kliora said.

Police were unsure if the girl was harmed, although she did not have any obvious signs of being battered, he said.

“We don’t know yet. It’s too early to tell right now,” Kliora said.

While investigating, the child’s neighbor told police that she saw a man in the area earlier Monday who had offered her children candy.

Mundelein police continue to investigate. Anyone with information can call (847) 968-4600.
