3 charged with stealing from Chicago area ATMs
Three Chicago men who worked to repair ATMs are facing charges after federal investigators say they looted about $1.3 million from the cash-dispensing machines.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports the trio ran ATS Uptime Inc., which worked to maintain and stock about 800 ATMs in the city and suburbs.
Randall Samborn is a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s office in Chicago. He compared the thefts, which authorities say took place between 2005 and 2012, to a Ponzi scheme.
All three are charged with wire fraud after prosecutors say they doctored balance sheets and shifted money from client to client and ATM to ATM.
They face up to 20 years in prison if they’re convicted. They’re set to appear in court Oct. 2.
