Strengthen sanctions before striking

On Tuesday the president said, “We are not the policeman of the world.” That is not completely true. It is oversimplistic. Later on he said, in effect, that we are the only country in the world with the ability to deter Syria with military force, and with that comes a responsibility to act. The truth lies somewhere in between, and that is the difficulty with these types of global issues and Syria in particular. What is needed is, or rather was two years ago in the case of Syria, a gradual escalation of serious sanctions before resorting to military force, again in gradual escalation. This is what is needed with Iran. The sanctions to date are not serious enough and should be escalated before it is too late.
