A pair of waterspouts were seen from downtown Waukegan and other lakefront suburbs Thursday. While waterspouts are basically tornadoes over water, they were no threat to land-dwellers.
Waterspout excitement at Lake County Building
Visitors and employees hunkered down yesterday afternoon in the Lake County Building in downtown Waukegan because of waterspouts on nearby Lake Michigan, but weather officials said there never was a threat to land. Full story with video.

New Carpentersville tree requires serious equipment
A new sugar maple tree in Carpentersville is so big it took a crane several hours to finally plant it into the ground yesterday. The tree, near a parking lot across from Otto Engineering on Main Street, weighed in at 20,000 pounds. Full story with video of the effort.
Davoust will challenge Cunningham for Kane County clerk
Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham will have competition from within his own party during his 2014 re-election bid as county board member Mark Davoust announced he will try to unseat the longtime clerk. Wisconsin incentives lure lighting business from Gurnee
Kenall Manufacturing, which has produced high-quality lighting products in Gurnee for 25 years, will expand into a new, much larger facility in Kenosha with room for growth. Elgin teen gets 3 years' probation for car burglaries
A 17-year-old from Elgin pleaded guilty to felony burglary in connection with a string of car burglaries in August and was sentenced to three years' probation. Full story.
Fox Lake man back in jail after new charges filed
A Fox Lake man who was out on bail while awaiting trial for his role in a 2012 alcohol-fueled crash that killed a friend now faces new trouble after being charged with attacking an ex-girlfriend, authorities said. Anthony Cechini, 24, was arrested by Fox Lake police on Sept. 6. Full story.
Snedeker leads BMW with string of birdies
When the very first scores posted on the enormous, hand-operated scoreboard in the media room at Conway Farms in Lake Forest read 3, 3 and 3 — as in birdie, birdie, birdie — well, you couldn't help but thinking "here we go." It was a low-scoring first round of the BMW Championship, which continues today. Full story.
