Chicago may pay $12.3 million for 2 police torture cases

A Chicago City Council committee is expected to consider more payouts for exonerated inmates who say police tortured them into giving false confessions.

If they’re approved, the two separate $6.15 million settlements would go to Ronald Kitchen and Marvin Reeves. The pair spent more than two decades in prison for the 1988 murders of five people.

They were released in 2009.

The payouts are set to be reviewed Friday by the City Council’s Finance Committee. If they’re approved, they’ll bring the total amount of awards in the torture cases tied to former Chicago police Lt. Jon Burge to $83 million.

Burge is in prison for obstruction of justice and perjury.

The settlements mean former Mayor Richard M. Daley wouldn’t have to testify about the systematic abuse of dozens of suspects.
