Police say both patients were housed in the same building but didn't release any details about the circumstances of the fight. An autopsy was planned to determine what caused Boyer's death.

Davis is from Indianapolis and is being held on preliminary murder charges at the Wayne County Jail. It wasn't clear whether he has a defense attorney.

The state-run hospital provides care for a variety of mental illnesses and substance abuse, with space for about 210 patients.
