Give kids a break on start of school

I was born and raised in the rural areas of Arlington Heights in 1949 and now reside in Mundelein. So at age 64, I have one question.

Schools have early outs because of high temperatures and/or lack of A/C. Duh! Why do schools start in mid August? Towns still have festivals going on and summer is so not over.

What happened to schools (parochial and public) starting after Labor Day and the world enjoys the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer?

In the old(en) days, kids were needed for the farm and school was started after Labor Day. Now today, teachers pushed for early out to start their summer side jobs. Excuses were made on both sides. Oh the college kids need jobs, etc.

Today the college kids don’t want to do most of those jobs.

There are those who believe that all children should go to school year round. I am not opposed to this concept if you struggle in learning. But give a kid a break and let him or her enjoy all the rituals of summer and their ages.

Geez, Louise. Let them be kids and free spirits.
