9-year-old hit by Aurora police car

An Aurora Police Department squad car struck a 9-year-old running across the street Friday night, authorities said.

The accident took place about 7 p.m. near the intersection of Ohio and Front streets, according to a police news release.

Police said the squad was traveling north on Ohio when the 9-year-old and a 7-year-old ran east across Ohio in front of the approaching car. The 7-year-old was not hit.

The officer stopped and administered first aid to the 9-year-old, who was transported to Presence Mercy Medical Center with possible internal injuries, police said.

The accident occurred as heavy thunderstorms were passing through the area Friday night. The initial determination by traffic investigators indicate speed was not a factor.

No citations were issued, and police say the investigation is ongoing.
