Bolingbrook quarry drowning victim identified
A teenager drowned in a Bolingbrook quarry Wednesday evening, police said.
Javier Vera, 17, of Bolingbrook, was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, authorities said.
Three 17-year-old boys from Bolingbrook — including Vera — entered a water-filled section of a quarry at 1421 W. 135th St. around 7:30 p.m., said Lt. Mike Rompa of the Bolingbrook Police Department.
The boys were swimming laps across the quarry, Rompa said, when one of them began to struggle. The other two boys tried to save the drowning teen, but he went under the water and did not resurface.
Rompa said the Plainfield Fire Department’s Dive Team located the boy at 9:04 p.m., and he was pronounced deceased around 9:44 p.m.
