Crews begin treating weed-filled Northwest Indiana lake

HOBART, Ind. — Crews in northwestern Indiana have begun treating a weed-clogged lake with herbicides intended to clear up its swamp-like waters.

Illinois-based Clarke Environmental got the go-ahead Friday from the state Department of Natural Resources to begin treating Lake George’s noxious vegetation.

The Times of Munster reports that crews with the company began treating the Lake County lake on Monday with herbicides that should combat two types of aquatic weeds. There will be no restrictions on swimming, fishing and domestic use during the treatments.

Lynn Stephens has lived in her lakeside home for 14 years and says the cleanup of Lake George is badly needed. She says the weeds in the lake are so thick that “the ducks and swans don’t even come around anymore.”
