Fair Grounds hires Arlington analyst Spencer

Brian W. Spencer, a handicapping expert at Arlington International Racecourse, has been hired as the new analyst at Fair Grounds racetrack in New Orleans.

After the recent announcement of Katie Mikolay Gensler’s maternity leave, Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots, which also is a Churchill Downs company, asked Spencer to join them for their 2013-2014 thoroughbred meet.

“While we will certainly miss Katie this winter, Fair Grounds is very pleased to bring someone with Brian’s on-air presence and handicapping skills aboard, said Eric Halstrom, Fair Grounds vice president and general manager, Eric Halstrom.

Spencer, 30, has worked for Arlington racing officials as a part-time analyst and media assistant, with a focus on handicapping and fan education working alongside Joe Kristufek. He has served as the Fair Grounds correspondent for HorseplayerNow.com for the last four seasons as well. As a key member of America’s Best Racing campaign, he helped spearhead Fan Education seminars in venues such as Keeneland, Arlington International, Pimlico and Belmont Park.

“I am grateful for the opportunity and very excited,” said Spencer. “While filling in for Katie will not be an easy task, I am looking forward to watching high-quality racing on a daily basis.”

The 2013-2014 Fair Grounds racing season begins Nov. 22.
