Islamic group protests police trainer coming to Lombard

An organization that puts on training seminars for police is refusing to cancel a counterterrorism session Monday in Lombard, despite objections from an Islamic group. The Chicago chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations says presenter Sam Kharoba is a "notorious anti-Muslim bigot," and plans to hold a news conference in protest outside Lombard village hall during the presentation. West Nile mosquitoes found in Elgin

Local health officials announced Thursday they had discovered mosquitoes infected with West Nile virus in Elgin. It was the second time in the past 30 days infected mosquitoes have been collected in the northern end of Kane County, though no human cases have been verified so far. Full story.

4 arrested in connection with Batavia burglaries

Four people have been arrested in connection with burglaries of houses in Batavia that happened between Aug. 5 and Wednesday. The burglaries occurred on Woodland Hills Road and Wagner Road, in the southeast side of the city. They occurred at night, while the residents were home. Police believe entry was made through open garage doors and possibly through an unlocked window. Full story.

Elgin woman ticketed in car vs. motorcycle crash

An Elgin woman was cited for her part in a car versus motorcycle crash in East Dundee Thursday that sent a 27-year-old motorcyclist to the hospital, officials said. Gloria Torres, 30, was ticketed for driving without a driver's license and for failing to yield from a private drive, police said. Full story.

Man serving 67 years for 2001 attack wants 2nd chance

Joseph A. Hauschild, a 29-year-old former Elmhurst man, cites his 4.0 grade-point average in obtaining his paralegal degree and good prison behavior record as evidence he can contribute to society. He also wants a second chance -- even though he was convicted and sentenced to 67 years in prison for the 2001 St. Charles home invasion and attempted murder of Delnor Hospital executive Tom Wright. Addison remembers high school teacher, chamber treasurer

From his time as a teacher at Addison Trail High School to his tenure as treasurer with the Addison Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Donald J. Layne made himself available to the community. On Thursday, the Addison community was there for his family. A number of friends, colleagues and former co-workers attended a memorial service at village hall for the longtime educator, who died Sunday at age 83. Full story.

More good than bad for offense in Bears' win

The Bears' first-team offense put up 14 points in the first quarter of Thursday night's 33-28 victory over the San Diego Chargers at Soldier Field, but the performance wasn't always pretty. Jay Cutler was sacked the first two times he dropped back to pass, fumbling the ball the first time, although it was recovered by tight end Martellus Bennett. Full story.

Herrmann's hit in 9th lifts Twins over Sox

Chris Herrmann's pinch-hit single in the bottom of the ninth scored pinch-runner Doug Bernier and lifted the Minnesota Twins to a 4-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Thursday night. The Twins trailed 3-2 heading into the eighth, but Joe Mauer doubled and scored on a base hit from Justin Morneau to tie it. Herrmann came through against Ramon Troncoso in the ninth to complete the comeback. Full story.
