Former Top 10 fugitive pleads guilty, but more charges await
One of McHenry County's 10 Most Wanted who was arrested in July in Florida, recently pleaded guilty to cocaine charges and was sentenced to 180 days in jail and two years probation.
Cecil T. Barnes, 31, formerly of the 5800 block of N. Winthrop Avenue, Chicago, can get out of McHenry County jail Oct. 2 for good behavior, but he still faces felony charges in Kane County that he sold cocaine near a Carpentersville school, according to court records.
The McHenry County Sheriff's Department has sought Barnes since February 2012 when an arrest warrant was issued for delivery of a controlled substance, a felony punishable by anywhere from probation to 15 years in prison.
As part of his guilty plea, Barnes was fined nearly $4,800, must submit to drug tests and pursue alcohol and drug addiction treatment, according to court records.
According to court records, Barnes faces charges of selling between 1 and 15 grams of cocaine within 1,000 feet of Lakewood Elementary School in Carpentersville Dec. 13, 2011, and delivery of a controlled substance.
If convicted of the most severe charge, he faces between six and 30 years in prison with no chance for probation.
Barnes next court date in Kane County has not been set.
Barnes was arrested July 15 by the U.S. Marshal's Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force. He was living in Destin, Fla., at the time.
