Jennifer Hudson gives away school supplies

Oscar- and Grammy-winning artist Jennifer Hudson has given away school supplies in her hometown of Chicago.

Hudson was at the giveaway with her sister, Julia Hudson. The sisters have the charity event every year in memory of their slain family members. Jennifer Hudson's mother, brother and nephew were killed in 2008. Julian was 7 when he died. They call the event Hatch Day. It provides school supplies to 5,000 children, including folders, paper, pencils and calculators.

Jennifer Hudson told WBBM that they chose the school supply giveaway because Julia “was so into education.” The sisters also give away toys at Christmas.
