Keller said authorities were still investigating how the crash occurred. It involved a Chrysler minivan and a Chevrolet SSR.

Petropoulos, the driver of the minivan, was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville where he was pronounced dead.

A formal autopsy is scheduled for Monday, Keller said.

The driver of the Chevy was also taken to Condell, where he was listed in serious condition.

Route 21 was closed for almost three hours as authorities investigated the crash and cleaned up wreckage.
