Police: 6-year-old shot in chest hit by crossfire

Associated Press

CHICAGO — Police say a 6-year-old girl who was shot in the chest and critically wounded was struck by crossfire as two gunmen shot at each other on Chicago’s Far South Side.

A 52-year-old woman was also hit in the leg and wounded during Friday night’s shooting in the Roseland neighborhood.

Both bystanders were out on a sidewalk at the time the shooting broke out.

Police spokesman Jose Estrada says they were transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center. He had no information on whether they were related.

No suspects were in custody Saturday morning.

Despite violent weekends, police say overall violence in the city is down this year. Police statistics show homicides are down 26 percent, compared with the same period last year.
