The tragic death of the woman that was hit by a cyclist June 18th on the Lake Arlington path should not be taken lightly.
However, as evidenced by the Daily Herald articles of July 9th and July 10th it looks like it already has the “kiss of death” for any action. The kiss is always the politicians’ saying that they will “study the matter further.”
I walk the Lake Arlington path every morning as I have for the last five years. Since I am out early, there is not the congestion that is found on weekends and in the evening, but on nice weather mornings, the path is still crowded.
Contrary to what Bryan Meyer and Ken Galinski say, I have never seen any park district personnel “patrolling on foot” and have never seen any police patrols either.
As near as I can tell trying to read the park district budget, it looks like the gross revenue from park district property taxes is at least $15 million and the district has an ending surplus of $16 million.
Surely they could find $800,000 to build a second, parallel path for safety and without raising taxes.
