Chicago to include energy costs on home listings

House hunters in Chicago will now be able to see the typical cost of providing gas and electric service to a prospective home.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel says the listings for Chicago homes on the Multiple Listing Service will display annual and monthly energy costs. He says Chicago is the first city in the nation to include the costs on home listings.

Emanuel says more and more homebuyers are choosing energy-efficient homes. He says providing the information will increase the value of homes that are more energy efficient.

The mayor calls it “a win-win that will create a better marketplace and opportunity in our neighborhoods.”

Anne Evens is executive director of CNT Energy. She says including the information in home listings “will help accelerate energy efficiency efforts in Chicago.”
