Illinois investigating listeria outbreak

Illinois public health officials say they’re investigating a listeria outbreak.

The Illinois Department of Public Health said Wednesday that cheese has been linked to a multistate outbreak of listeria. Specifically state officials are asking consumers to dispose of Les Freres cheese made by Crave Brothers Farmstead Classics Cheese of Wisconsin.

State health officials say one Illinois resident became sick after eating the cheese in May. The state says it is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Listeria can lead to severe illness for women who are pregnant or people who have a weakened immune system.

Experts say Illinois has about 25 to 35 cases of listeria annually.
