Coast Guard warns of hazards on Lake Michigan

Associated Press

The U.S. Coast Guard is warning of hazardous conditions on Lake Michigan for boaters and swimmers near Chicago.

The Coast Guard put out a release Monday, saying a small craft warning remains in effect through Tuesday night. Authorities say high winds and heavy surf were responsible for capsizing two sailboats on Sunday.

Winds were more than 30mph and waves were about 5 feet.

One incident happened Sunday night when a woman called the Coast Guard to report her husband and a friend were five hours late from a sailboat trip. Crews used a helicopter to find the men and the capsized 16-foot boat 200 yards off Highland Park. The men did not need medical assistance.

Also Sunday night an 18-foot sailboat overturned near Wilmette. Coast Guard crews rescued three men.
