Missing Storm Sewer Grates Prompt Alert to West Chicago Residents

By

West Chicago, Illinois: July 1, 2013 -- The City of West Chicago is alerting residents of a situation involving the theft of storm sewer grates in the Hampton Hills subdivision and throughout the community. The thefts are occurring in both the north and south sides of town, with the largest concentration being in the Westgrove subdivision.

The missing grates present obvious hazards, especially to pedestrians and bicyclists. When situations require the lawful removal of storm sewer grates for maintenance or repair, City crews always leave a barricade or some other safety device to warn people of the grates' absence. Therefore, should residents notice someone removing a grate without leaving a safety device, they are asked to contact the West Chicago Police at (630) 293-2222 and provide as much detail about the individual and/or associated vehicle as possible.
