Carol Stream, Ill. – June 26, 2013 – Windsor Park, a Covenant Retirement Community in Carol Stream, invites the community to view “Bound for Glory,” an exhibit of expressive calligraphy inspired by African-American spirituals. A reception for the artist, Timothy R. Botts, takes place on Tuesday, July 9 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Centrum of Windsor Park, 124 Windsor Park Drive.
The 20-piece gallery show is of original artwork created for the book “Bound for Glory” and can be viewed daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., until Aug. 1. Botts will have books and 11” x 14” archival prints available for purchase and signing at the reception. Copies of “Bound for Glory” are available for purchase in the Windsor Park gift shop.
According to Botts, “Bound for Glory” resulted from both his desire to connect with his three African-American grandchildren and his experience singing spirituals as a youth in his church choir.
“I was looking for a way to celebrate my grandchildren’s ethnic background,” said Botts. “I see the power and emotion depicted by the entire genre of African-American spirituals as one of the greatest gifts to the world.”
Botts’ family also factors into how the artwork is displayed. All the frames of the pieces were handcrafted by his oldest son, Andrew, a carpenter in St. Louis. The unique frames were built of wood salvaged from remodeled buildings and homes in the St. Louis area.
