Twin Lakes Triathlon canceled due to flooding

By

The annual Twin Lakes Triathlon in Palatine scheduled for Sunday has been canceled due to flooding, officials said on Thursday night.

According to a statement posted on the Salt Creek Rural Park District website "Following the consultation with local authorities and race coordinators, it was determined that the extensive flooding at the Twin Lakes Recreation Area has caused deplorable conditions for the race. Since the entire park is currently under water, staff is unable to even access the site for final set up. The decision to cancel was also based upon the unsanitary conditions caused from the receding floodwaters."

Several large storms moved through the Northwest suburbs this week causing flooding issues.

This is the first year in the race's 24-year history that it has been canceled, wrote Jonelle Bailey, Park District superintendent and race director.

Bailey said they tried to come up with alternative plans, but it was impractical on such short notice. Attempts to reschedule the event also didn't work out due to the amount of village personnel and sponsor groups involved, Bailey said.

Registered participants will not receive a refund, but Bailey said they are working to get a possible discount for people for another race. People can still pick up their race shirts at Rose Park, 530 S. Williams Avenue, Palatine.
