Dawn Patrol: Small plane crashes in Wheeling; Street gang sued

A heavy thunderstorm is already going off over the northern suburbs this morning, leading to a flash flood warning until 11:30 a.m. for Lake, McHenry and northern Cook counties. Wheeling plane crash could have been worse

A small airplane crashed a half-mile from Wheeling's Chicago Executive Airport last night, and officials are lauding the pilot for steering the plane away from nearby condominiums. The pilot reported a problem to the airport about 8:30 p.m., just before putting the plane down near Wolf and Hintz roads. Full story.

Lawmakers disagree with Metra chief's severance deal

Lawmakers angry about a $422,000 severance package given to former Metra CEO Alex Clifford said yesterday that the agency shouldn't pass that cost onto riders or ask the state for more money. Clifford's contract was set to expire in February. Full story.

Hainesville backs away from assault weapons ban

Hainesville village leaders declined to vote last night on a plan that would have banned its residents from owning assault weapons. The board agreed to remove the agenda item and instead defer to state and federal laws. Full story.

Elgin man's sex assault trial continues

A mother testified Tuesday that her daughter told her about sexual assaults at the hands of Randall Behning. The prosecution also put one of Behning's neighbors on the stand. The Elgin resident's defense will present its side today as the trial continues in Rolling Meadows. Full story.

Elgin street gang sued by state's attorney

Kane County State's Attorney Joe McMahon turned his sights on the Maniac Latin Disciples gang and 25 of its known members by filing a civil suit against them. The suit seeks to prohibit them from congregating in public and addresses the possession and use of weapons, drugs, graffiti, violent behavior and other gang-related activities. Full story.

Traffic

Construction continues on Monaville Road near Round Lake Beach from Route 83 to Cedar Lake Road. Through traffic is being blocked, so people need to find an alternate route. In addition, traffic has been shut down at Golf and Mount Prospect roads in Mount Prospect due to an accident with injuries that knocked over alight pole. People should fine an alternate route. Unsung Sharp came up huge for Hawks

Following their loss to the Blackhawks Monday, Bruins players singled out one guy who surprised them: Patrick Sharp. β€œIt's not the time of year to feel tired, even though everyone is,” Sharp said on the ice early Tuesday morning while the Hawks celebrated their victory at TD Garden. β€œI love playing in these games and I love being in this moment. Ramirez bails out Beckham in 5-4 Sox win
