Big inning again does in Cubs' Jackson

MILWAUKEE — Don't look now, but Cubs pitcher Edwin Jackson has 10 losses, and the season isn't quite half over.

Jackson fell to 3-10 with a 5.84 ERA on Tuesday night as the Milwaukee Brewers pounded him in a 9-3 victory over the Cubs at Miller Park.

The Cubs signed Jackson to a four-year, $52 million contract in the off-season, and he has pitched as poorly as his record indicates.

“It's a long ways to go,” he said. “The only way you find out what's going to happen is keep throwing.

“I'm sure nobody in this clubhouse has lost confidence or anything, but it's a tough game we play. You've got a choice. Either you can give up and be buried, or you can keep fighting.”

Once again, a big inning did in Jackson. Nate Schierholtz gave the Cubs a 3-1 lead in the third with a 3-run homer, his 11th. But Jackson couldn't get out of the fifth, when Milwaukee scored 5 runs.

“We just can't control some innings, and they start going a little bad,” said manager Dale Sveum, whose team is 31-44. “Tonight, from the get-go, I don't think he had much of a fastball. He averaged 92 miles an hour, so it's going to be tough for him to pitch with that velocity.”

Cubs batters were 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position against Kyle Lohse and the Brewers' bullpen.

Stewart released:The Cubs parted ways with third baseman Ian Stewart. Stewart's 10-day suspension without pay was upheld, and the Cubs then released him.Stewart got into hot water recently with comments he made on Twitter, on which he said he felt buried by the organization and that Dale Sveum did not like him.He missed most of last year because of wrist surgery. His spring training was derailed because of a quad injury. He rehabbed at Class AAA Iowa before being taken off the 40-man roster last month.General manager Jed Hoyer did not wish to comment on specifics of the release.#8220;The decision was for the two sides to part ways,#8221; Hoyer said. #8220;I think it allows Ian to hopefully continue his career somewhere else.#8220;I think for us, it was the right time to go in a different direction. We've gotten great production out of (Luis) Valbuena and out of (Cody) Ransom this year. Third base right now in the big leagues is not a position of need.#8221;The Cubs obtained Stewart from Colorado in December 2011 for young players Tyler Colvin and DJ LeMahieu.#8220;I don't think it's a decision that does any material damage to the organization going forward,#8221; Hoyer said of the trade. #8220;If that's a miss, it's a miss, but I don't think it's one that's particularly damaging.#8221;Bogusevic brought up:The Cubs selected the contract of outfielder Brian Bogusevic from Class AAA Iowa as they designated reliever Carlos Marmol for assignment. Bogusevic, a native of Oak Lawn, has big-league experience with the Houston Astros.After a good spring training, he went to Iowa and put up a line of .319/.418/.512 with 14 doubles, 3 triples, 10 homers, 32 RBI and 16 stolen bases in 78 games.#8220;This is where I wanted to be,#8221; he said. #8220;It's good to be here, and I'm excited to get a chance. I think it's tough for anybody anytime they don't end spring training where they want to be.#8220;There's only one thing you can do, and that's go out there and play every day and work hard and hope for another chance.#8221;
