Key Chicago schools hearing won’t be delayed

A federal judge is keeping the pressure on parties in a legal battle over the shuttering of Chicago public schools.

Judge John Lee told parties during a Tuesday status hearing to be ready for a key July hearing that could halt the closings. Lee says he won’t delay the July 16 date to hear evidence on a temporary injunction. That’s despite volumes of material the sides must prepare.

The Chicago Board of Education voted recently to close 50 schools and programs. The Chicago Teachers Union filed lawsuits on behalf of parents to stop the closings.

July’s hearing could last days. Afterward, Lee will rule on the temporary injunction. A final ruling would come after a trial or settlement. Officials say budgetary issues required the closings. Parents say they’ll hurt students.
