Gire receives journalism education honor

Daily Herald Film Critic Dann Gire is being honored with the Illinois Journalism Education Association’s Friend of Scholastic Journalism award.

The award recognizes individuals and organizations demonstrating commitment to journalism education.

Gire was nominated by friend Stan Zoller, a former journalism teacher at Rolling Meadows High School.

“When you factor in everything that Dann Gire does, it’s safe to say that Illinois journalists, no matter where they practice, have no better friend than Dann Gire,” Zoller wrote in his nomination.

In addition to his work at the Daily Herald, Gire has taught college journalism for more than two decades, presented countless journalism workshops to area high school journalism students and hosts numerous community film critique programs throughout the suburbs each year.

Gire also serves as the president and founding director of the Chicago Film Critics Association and is a board member for the Chicago Headline Club, the Windy City chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

He has won the prestigious Peter Lisagor Award for Exemplary Journalism in Arts Criticism seven times, as well as awards from the Association of Sunday and Feature Editors, The Associated Press, and other journalism organizations. In 2011, he was named Journalism Department Alumnus of the Year by his alma mater, Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Gire will receive the journalism education award at a ceremony in September.
