The village of Hawthorn Woods and the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County are working together for second year in a row to collect used and gently worn gym shoes. Used shoes will be shredded into new athletic surfaces, such as running tracks, playgrounds and other sports surfaces. Gently worn shoes will be donated to a local shoe charity that gets footwear to people in need. Last year, the collection netted 300 pairs of shoes to be recycled and 100 gently worn pairs to be reused. Collection boxes will be at Community Park during the farmers market each Friday through Sept. 20. There is a collection box located year-round in the village hall lobby, 2 Lagoon Drive.
