Chicago man gets 35 years for strangling baby

A Chicago man has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for strangling his 14-month-old son and dumping the boy’s body in Lake Michigan.

Cook County prosecutors say 33-year-old Donald Johnson pleaded guilty on Wednesday to first-degree murder. He was accused in the October 2010 death of his infant son, Dontrell Johnson.

Prosecutors say Johnson picked the boy up from the child’s mother on Oct. 4, 2010. Family members said Johnson called them in the following days, threatening to kill himself and the boy.

Relatives called police, who couldn’t locate Johnson or the boy.

A boater found the boy’s body wrapped in a net and floating in the lake.
