State unveils math coursework for 6th-12th grades

SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois State Board of Education has released the state’s first set of math courses for 6th through 12th grade classes.

Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon and the board announced the curriculum on Thursday. Simon is the state’s point person for education reform. The package of coursework is aimed at reducing remedial math needs for college-bound students and making students better prepared for the workforce.

State officials say a special task force prepared the coursework. They say teachers can adapt the units as needed. The new courses will be available this fall.
