Dog owners should respect leash laws

I’m wondering if residents realize anymore that Arlington Heights has very specific leash laws for dogs. All dogs must be on a leash no more than 8 feet in length at all times when they are off their owner’s property.

After living in Scarsdale Estates for almost 30 years, I am seeing more and more people walking down my busy street where we don’t have sidewalks with their dog totally off leash and often several houses behind them, running up and down the lawns. Or the dog is at the end of a 15-foot retractable leash while the owner is on the phone and cars can’t go down the street.

I have been an owner of multiple dogs throughout the 30 years and I no longer feel safe walking my dogs on leash in my own neighborhood because of all the loose dogs running up to them.

Putting a leash on a dog when you’re out on a walk is not a punishment. It shows you care enough about the dog to protect them from cars and other dogs and it is the law.
