Astronaut Lovell to dedicate memorial garden

CHICAGO — Apollo 13 astronaut Capt. James Lovell Jr. will help dedicate a Chicago memorial garden paying tribute to the 10th anniversary of the space shuttle Columbia disaster.

Lovell and Chicago Alderman Edward Burke will dedicate the garden and unveil a sculpture representing exploration Monday morning in Chicago. The dedication will be at Columbia Explorers Academy, a neighborhood school in Chicago.

Community members and more than 1,000 students from the school will attend the dedication.

Feb. 1 was the 10th anniversary of the Columbia tragedy. Seven astronauts were lost when the shuttle disintegrated as it returned to earth from a 16-day mission.
