Harvest Christian’s Nelson makes 1A finals in 1,600

Harvest Christian freshman Hannah Nelson qualified Thursday for the finals in the 1,600-meter run during the prelims at the Class 1A state track and field meet in Charleston.

Nelson ran the race in 5:24.66, nearly five seconds better than her time at the Lisle sectional. Her time downstate Thursday was the 11th best of the 12 finals qualifiers.

Nelson will run in the finals on Saturday.

She was the only state qualifying Lion to advance to Saturday’s finals. Sophomore Valerie Richter competed in the 800 run and had a time of 2:32.57, while junior Sydney Doby threw the discus nearly 10 feet farther than at sectionals but failed to advance. Doby threw 107 feet, .04 inches on Thursday.

The Lions’ 1,600 relay team of Anneliese Herman, Whitney Donaldson, Anna Oelerich and Richter finished in a time of 11:25.17.
